Chapter 16

Court was never held at night but with so many vampires in attendance the king thought it best if at least one court day a week was after sundown. At the moment he sat tapping his claw on the arm of his throne trying not to cut the heads off the two bickering brothers in front of him.

"If you would stop being so high and mighty, maybe your brood wouldn't starve," Sebastian said.

"My brood does well," Esteban answered. "We have survived for years without having familiars."

"How is that working for you now?" Sebastian asked. "Maybe I should go and talk to your brood and see who will continue to follow you or come with me."

Esteban's fangs flashed and he grabbed his brother by his throat. "If you dare - "

"Quiet!" The king roared and came to his feet. "You both make me want to force you into the sun." He waited for them to back up from each other before continuing, "Esteban, why do you not use familiars?"

"I am not a savage," Esteban answered. "My brother would have me charm familiars and take away their free will. I will not do so."

"They are willing, in a way." Sebastian waved his hand dismissively. "They are from the fringes of society and have no family left."

"Do you tell them upfront what they are getting into?" Esteban asked. "Do you tell them that their life expectancy is reduced?"

"They are human. Their life is already short." Sebastian smirked.

"You slimy ass." Esteban growled as he went for Sebastian's throat.

"For the love of all that we hold sacred, stop talking/fighting, whatever it is you are doing. Just stop." The king rubbed his temples. "You bicker more than my hatchlings."

"My king," Jarod spoke up from where he was standing. "I may have a solution. It's a longshot but still a solution."

"Please do tell."

"I was talking over this issue with my mate last night and she suggested Goth clubs."

"Goth clubs?" the king asked.

"It’s a place where humans go to play around with the supernatural, or at least pretend to. Maybe the vampires can find willing humans there."

The king stroked his chin. "Maybe. What do you think?" he asked Esteban.

"I have never heard of these clubs but it wouldn’t hurt to look."

"Be ready in ten minutes. We will meet in the blessing ground," the king said, sitting back. "Jarod, how are the shifters doing?"

"They have regained their strength and a few will be crossing to the human realm." Jarod turned and waved Damon forward. "I talked to Damon earlier about sending a few scouts across."

"King," Damon said. "I have the scouts ready to leave. They will look for the pack and report back to me. I need to know what I am walking into."

"Agreed," the king said. "When can they be ready?"

"They stand ready now," Damon answered.

"We are already opening a portal for the vampires. You will cross with them." The king stood. "We are going to adjourn until we have more information." He left the room with his personal guard close behind.
